Welcome to CyDAS, the Cyprus Database of Alien Species

CyDAS is based on the initial work of Dr Kelly Martinou, who collated lists of alien species on Cyprus from several existing databases. See her report for more information on this work. As a part of the RIS-Ky project, we have transferred this information into a new database, with the aim of making a "one stop shop" of information on alien species on Cyprus, and have added much new data. This database will be curated by local and international experts in the future.

Contributing data to CyDAS

We now have two iNaturalist projects specifically aimed at collecting occurrence data on non-native species in Cyprus (thanks to Jakovos Demetriou). See:

The CyDAS database was initially based on a collation of existing information by Dr Kelly Martinou. The design of CyDAS itself was led by Dr Oliver Pescott, with support from John van Breda of BiodiverseIT. John van Breda engineered the database and the web presentation. Charlotte Johns collated and reformatted the existing Martinou compilation to the new CyDAS fields and uploaded the majority of the species' data. Sara Boschi checked and formatted several new datasets from our contributors. Jakovos Demetriou has also contributed much new information, and performed many checks. Thanks are also due to Jakovos for the lovely CyDAS logo!

Sources

The initial compilation of the database is outlined by Martinou (n.d.), but included data from DAISIE, EASIN, GBIF, and data from the unpublished ELNAIS database maintained by Dr Argyro Zenetos at the Hellenic Marine Research Centre. Since this initial compilation, data has also been contributed by Nikolas Michailidis from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (Republic of Cyprus Government). We have also benefitted from the excellent online Flora of Prof. Ralf Hand and colleagues (Hand R., Hadjikyriakou G. N. & Christodoulou C. S. (eds) 2011– (continuously updated): Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist. Published at http://www.flora-of-cyprus.eu/). Additional information on plant species in particular has been collected through two Darwin Plus-funded projects (DPLUS056 and DPLUS088). Further information and updates , particularly on insects, have been undertaken through DPLUS124. Much of this information is also openly available on GBIF.
